My Zero Waste Tips + Products
Within the past year I have become extremely conscious about my waste and the amount of garbage I create. I started with always making sure I was recycling and as I looked more into it everything definitely got a little bit intimidating.
The term "zero waste" is very intimidating but in my opinion it doesn’t have to be. Working towards living a zero waste life doesn't mean being perfect it's just making every effort you can to be conscious about the amount of waste you create. The more conscious you become the easier it all gets! You don’t need a ton of fancy products. All you need to know is the basics of living a more mindful life.
I'll start by giving you my best tips for working towards zero waste and then give you my absolute favorite zero waste products.
The only way to ensure that you will always have your reusable products with you everywhere you go is by obviously taking them with you everywhere you go! If your like me you have a backpack, bag, or purse that you take with you every time you leave the house. That being said I always have two major things in my bag and those are a reusable straw as well as reusable chopsticks. I find those to be the ones I'm needing the most. Some people like to bring around reusable cutlery but I don’t find myself avoiding plastic ware as much as single use chopsticks. To each their own tho!
Another is jars and tupperware which are literally flooding my kitchen. Good for any leftovers from dinner or to store chopped veggies or to take a lunch in to work or school. Glass jars are definitely better than plastic tupperware but if you’re looking for a more eco-friendly way to get these things check out the home section of your favorite thrift store! I find myself wandering the home section the thrift store every time I go. I always keep an eye out for jars and tupperware because they're super cheap and buying second hand is always the better option!
Now I'm not the biggest coffee fan but I am well aware that a lot of people are and getting coffee from your favorite coffee shop is a lot of people's favorite morning ritual. The next time you head out to grab your cup of jo from your favorite shop bring a reusable travel mug with you! Most coffee shops would love to put your drink into the cup for you and probably have tons of people doing that exact thing every day by now!
I love take out food as much as the next person. There's nothing I love more than getting take out from my favorite Asian restaurant, taking it back to my couch, and putting on my favorite tv show. If this is also your favorite thing to do on a Sunday night but you want to avoid the take out boxes then here's a little life hack for you! Go to the restaurant and tell them you'd like to take some food to go but want to be able to put it in your own container to avoid waste. Beware most place will say no due to cross contamination and sanitary purposes but you can ask them to put it on a plate for you then you can pack it up in your own container and be on your way! I know it seems like such a task for a little but of take out but it will definitely be worth it and you'll be so happy with yourself after! The planet thanks you!
When buying products at the grocery store try going to a store that has a bulk section where you can bring in your own jars or bags for your oats, flours, or nuts. Some stores that have bulk sections are whole food, sprouts, winco, or natural grocers (these options could change depending on where you live) You should also always bring produce bags and reusable shopping bags every time you go to the store! Keep them in your car or bag to make sure you never forget them!
